Metabolic and thermogenic properties of the subcutaneous white adipose tissue of wild and laboratory rodents

For the first time biochemical analysis of inguinal adipose tissue of korean mouse (Apodemus peninsulae) and short-tailed vole (Microtus agrestis) have performed. Expression of uncoupling protein UCP1 in inguinal fat was combined with high metabolic and oxidative activity of this fat depot in wild rodents, in comparison with laboratory mice. Studies of the adipose tissues in animals from natural populations can be useful for the elucidating of the physiological norm of their functioning and for the development of regimes for the prevention and correction of metabolic disorders

Freeman-Sheldon syndrome is defined as a combination of microstomia, deep set eyes, small palpebral fissures, arthrogryposis with ulnar deviation of the hand, talipes equinovarus and generalized muscular hypertension. Respiratory and swallowing problems are frequently encountered in these patients due to small orifices of mouth and nose. Obstruction of the upper airway tract resulting in tracheostomy has only been described twice. The described child manifested the typical dysmorphic features of Freeman-Sheldon syndrome and suffered from serious respiratory distress and swallowing difficulties from birth. The boy died at the age of 7 months after accidental decannulation of the tracheostoma during sleep. He did not show anatomical or histopathological abnormalities in the pharyngeal, laryngeal or tracheal regions. We assume that the only explanation of the repeated obstructive episodes is a functional muscular obstruction. Copyright © 2002 S. Karger AG, Basel

Four analogues of the spin-crossover complex [Fe(H2Bpz2)2(phen)] (H2Bpz2 = dihydrobis(pyrazolyl)borate; 2) containing functionalized 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) ligands have been prepared; i.e., [Fe(H2Bpz2)2(L)], L = 4-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline (3), 5-chloro-1,10-phenanthroline (4), 4,7-dichloro-1,10-phenanthroline (5), and 4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (6). The systems are investigated by magnetic susceptibility measurements and a range of spectroscopies in the solid state and in thin films obtained by physical vapour deposition (PVD). Thermal as well as light-induced SCO behaviour is observed for 3–6 in the films. By contrast, thermal SCO in the solid state occurs only for 3 and 4 but is absent for 5 and 6. These findings are discussed in the light of cooperative and intermolecular interactions

Density Profiles in Random Quantum Spin Chains

We consider random transverse-field Ising spin chains and study the magnetization and the energy-density profiles by numerically exact calculations in rather large finite systems (L128L\le 128). Using different boundary conditions (free, fixed and mixed) the numerical data collapse to scaling functions, which are very accurately described by simple analytic expressions. The average magnetization profiles satisfy the Fisher-de Gennes scaling conjecture and the corresponding scaling functions are indistinguishable from those predicted by conformal invariance.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 4 eps-figures include

Influence of Cu(СH[3]COO)[2] promoting additive on bituminous coal oxidation process

The process of coal oxidation with applied Cu(СH[3]COO)[2] additive was studied by the capillary incipient wetness impregnation method with 5% mass concentration. The experiment was conducted by thermogravimetric analysis at a heating rate of 2.5°C/min to a maximum temperature of 600°C in atmospheric air. It was established that application of the initiation additive leads to a significant reduction in the initial temperature of sublimation and active oxidation of volatile compounds ([tau]Ti=78°C) and the oxidation end temperature ([tau]T[f]=64°C). It was established that in the presence of copper acetate the nature of coal oxidation reaction significantly changes (DTG data). The parameters of the coals oxidation process in the presence of copper acetate were determined, and an assumption was made about the presence of a composite catalytic effect
